Nashville Hotel Taxes & Fees in 2026: The Short Version
- The percentage: 9.75% sales tax (7% Tennessee + 2.75% Davidson County, which includes the 0.5% transit surcharge voters approved in November 2024) plus Metro’s 7% hotel occupancy tax = 16.75% on the room rate.
- The flat fee: a further $2.50 per room, per night, collected by Metro.
- Destination / resort fees: $25–$45 per night at many downtown towers, and they are taxed at the same 16.75%, so a $30 fee really costs $35.03.
- Parking: $38–$58 per night at the hotels in our registry, quoted before tax.
- The escape routes: $0-fee hotels such as Drury Plaza and Four Seasons, Hyatt and Hilton points stays that waive the fee, and public garages at $20–$35.

A $350 room in Nashville does not cost $350. By the time the folio prints, the same night at a downtown tower with a destination fee and valet can pass $500. None of that is hidden exactly, but it is scattered across the rate screen, the “taxes and fees” pop-up and the parking sign in the garage, and the booking sites round differently from the hotel. This guide puts every line item in one place: the two sales taxes, Metro’s occupancy tax, the flat nightly fee, destination fees and how they are taxed, parking, and the handful of ways to legally avoid paying some of it.
Rates and fee amounts for the hotels named below come from our registry and were checked in October 2026. Tax rates come from the Tennessee Department of Revenue and Metro Nashville’s Finance Department. If you only want the list of hotels that skip the fee entirely, jump to our audit of Nashville hotels without resort fees.

What a Nashville Hotel Bill Contains in 2026: 16.75% + $2.50 Explained
Hotel rooms in Nashville are taxed twice, by two different governments, and then hit with a flat fee. The first layer is ordinary sales tax, because Tennessee treats lodging as a taxable sale: 7% to the state, plus the Davidson County local option rate. That local rate rose from 2.25% to 2.75% on February 1, 2025, after voters approved a 0.5% transit surcharge on November 5, 2024 to fund the Choose How You Move program; the Department of Revenue notice confirms the combined 9.75%. The second layer is Metro Nashville’s hotel occupancy privilege tax, which Metro Council raised from 6% to 7% effective July 1, 2023 to help finance the new Titans stadium; Metro’s Finance Department page on the increase also notes that the nightly fee stayed at $2.50. Hotels remit both the percentage and the per-night amount through the Metro Collections Office.
| Line on your folio | Rate | Who levies it | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tennessee state sales tax | 7.00% | State of Tennessee | Room rate and any mandatory resort / destination fee |
| Davidson County local sales tax | 2.75% (2.25% + 0.50% transit surcharge since Feb 1, 2025) | Metro Nashville, collected by the state | Same base as above |
| Hotel occupancy privilege tax | 7.00% (6% + 1% added July 1, 2023) | Metro Nashville | Same base as above |
| Combined percentage | 16.75% | — | Room rate + taxed fees |
| Flat occupancy fee | $2.50 per room per night | Metro Nashville | Every occupied room-night, regardless of rate |
| Parking (valet or self) | $38–$58 per night at registry hotels | The hotel | Quoted before tax; Tennessee lists overnight parking as a taxable service |
Two details trip people up. The $2.50 is per room, not per guest, and it is the same on a $150 night as on a $900 night, so it matters most at budget hotels. And the 16.75% is not what every booking site shows: some display taxes and fees as a lump sum that bundles the destination fee, while others leave the destination fee out until the hotel charges it at check-in. The hotel folio is the only document that itemizes all of it.
Worked Examples: What $200, $350 and $600 Nashville Rooms Really Cost Per Night
The table below applies the exact 2026 formula: room rate × 16.75%, plus $2.50, plus any mandatory fee × 1.1675. Fee amounts are real ones from our registry: $25 (Margaritaville, Holston House, Tempo by Hilton, Graduate), $32 (Grand Hyatt, Thompson), $35 (The Joseph, 1 Hotel) and $45 (Gaylord Opryland). Rates are illustrative; actual Nashville rates swing from under $200 on a January weeknight to several times that during CMA Fest.
| Scenario | Room rate | 16.75% tax | $2.50 fee | Destination fee incl. 16.75% tax | True nightly total | 3-night total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $200 room, no fee (e.g. Drury Plaza, AC Hotel) | $200.00 | $33.50 | $2.50 | $0 | $236.00 | $708.00 |
| $200 room + $25 fee (e.g. Margaritaville, Tempo) | $200.00 | $33.50 | $2.50 | $29.19 | $265.19 | $795.57 |
| $350 room, no fee (e.g. Renaissance, Hilton Downtown) | $350.00 | $58.63 | $2.50 | $0 | $411.13 | $1,233.39 |
| $350 room + $32 fee (e.g. Grand Hyatt, Thompson) | $350.00 | $58.63 | $2.50 | $37.36 | $448.49 | $1,345.47 |
| $300 room + $45 fee (Gaylord Opryland) | $300.00 | $50.25 | $2.50 | $52.54 | $405.29 | $1,215.87 |
| $600 room, no fee (e.g. Four Seasons, The Hermitage) | $600.00 | $100.50 | $2.50 | $0 | $703.00 | $2,109.00 |
| $600 room + $35 fee (e.g. The Joseph, 1 Hotel) | $600.00 | $100.50 | $2.50 | $40.86 | $743.86 | $2,231.58 |
Read across the rows and the pattern is clear: a fee-free $200 room costs 18% more than its headline rate, while the same room with a $25 fee costs nearly 33% more. At the $350 tier, the $32 Grand Hyatt or Thompson fee adds $112 to a three-night stay once tax is applied. And because Gaylord Opryland’s $45 fee is the highest in our registry, its $300 room ends up within $6 of a fee-free $350 room downtown. Add parking, covered below, before you compare any two hotels.
Destination Fees and Resort Fees in Nashville: What They Include and Why They Are Taxed
Nashville hotels call them “Destination Amenity Fee,” “Destination Fee” or simply “resort fee,” and in 2026 they range from $25 to $45 per night across our registry. The Westin and JW Marriott charge $30 + tax; W Nashville $30; The Joseph and 1 Hotel $35; Grand Hyatt and Thompson $32; Hyatt Centric $28; Kimpton Aertson $28 (the hotel ties it to its nightly hosted wine hour); Tempo by Hilton $25, which the hotel says includes a daily food-and-beverage credit; and Gaylord Opryland $45, which the resort says covers items such as its scheduled shuttle to Opry Mills and The Inn at Opryland for two guests. Whether the Wi-Fi, gym access or drink credit is worth the money is a matter of taste; whether you pay it is not, because the fee is mandatory and is charged whether you use any of it.
The tax treatment is the part most travelers miss. Because the fee is a mandatory charge for occupying the room, it is taxed like the room: 16.75%, not the 9.75% sales-tax-only rate. That is why the registry lists Gaylord’s fee as “$45 + 16.75% tax per night ($52.54/night total)” and why a $30 fee quietly becomes $35.03. On a four-night stay at a $35-fee hotel the fee alone comes to $163.44. Fees are usually not shown in the headline rate on comparison sites, so two hotels listing $320 can differ by $40 a night at checkout.

One more wrinkle: fee amounts change with little notice, and hotels in the same brand family set them independently. Marriott’s Nashville portfolio alone runs from $0 at Renaissance, AC Hotel and Sheraton Grand to $45 at Gaylord Opryland. Always open the rate details before you book, and screenshot the fee disclosure; if the front desk quotes a higher number at check-in, the disclosure is your leverage.
Hotel Parking in Nashville: The $38–$58 Line Most Budgets Forget
Parking is the biggest non-tax item on a downtown folio. Valet at Four Seasons, JW Marriott, Grand Hyatt, The Joseph, 1 Hotel and W Nashville is $58 per night; Thompson and the Westin charge $56; Bobby Hotel and Dream $55; Hyatt Centric and AC Hotel $54; Tempo $52; Margaritaville and Kimpton Aertson $50. Self-parking exists at a minority of hotels: Drury Plaza’s on-site garage is $38, the cheapest major hotel garage in SoBro; Hilton Nashville Downtown and Renaissance charge $48 to self-park; Sheraton Grand $45; Gaylord Opryland $38 self or $50 valet. Tennessee lists overnight parking among its taxable services, so expect sales tax on top of the posted number at most properties; Gaylord’s own site notes its parking prices are subject to tax.
Three nights of $58 valet is $174 before tax, roughly the cost of a fee-free weeknight at a mid-range hotel. The alternatives are the public garages our downtown hotel parking guide maps out: the Music City Center garage across from the Westin, 1 Hotel and JW Marriott at roughly $25–$35 per day, the Nashville Public Library garage near Renaissance, Sheraton Grand and Holston House at about $20–$28, and the Nashville Yards garage beside Grand Hyatt. Or skip the car entirely; our guide to getting around Nashville without a car shows how far a $2 WeGo fare and a few Ubers go downtown.

How to Avoid Nashville Hotel Fees: $0-Fee Hotels, Hyatt & Hilton Points, and Reading the Rate Screen
The cleanest fix is to book a hotel that does not charge a fee at all. Our registry lists eight downtown and Midtown hotels at $0: Drury Plaza Hotel Nashville Downtown (which also includes a hot breakfast and the 5:30 Kickback with three drinks per adult), Four Seasons, The Hermitage, Hilton Nashville Downtown, Renaissance, AC Hotel, Virgin Hotels and Sheraton Grand. Because the fee is taxed, choosing one of these saves 16.75% more than the sticker suggests. Our Drury Plaza review explains why its all-in cost is hard to beat in SoBro once food is counted.
The second fix is loyalty points. The registry records the fee as waived on World of Hyatt points stays at Grand Hyatt ($32), Thompson ($32), Hyatt Centric ($28), Dream Nashville ($30) and Holston House ($25), and on Hilton Honors points stays at Conrad Nashville ($30). An award night usually carries little or no room-rate tax because there is no room revenue to tax, though the $2.50 nightly fee can still post. We have not verified an equivalent waiver for Marriott-affiliated hotels such as JW Marriott, the Westin, W Nashville, The Joseph or Gaylord Opryland, so read the award rate rules on those. The third fix is procedural: on any booking site, open the price breakdown before paying and look for three separate things, the 16.75% tax, the $2.50 nightly fee and a resort or destination fee line; if one is missing, it is not absent, it is simply being collected at the desk.

Pre-Booking Checklist: Seven Questions Before You Pay for a Nashville Hotel
- Is the quoted price before or after the 16.75% tax and the $2.50 nightly fee? Multiply the base by 1.1675 and add $2.50 to check.
- Is there a destination or resort fee, how much is it, and does the booking site include it in the total? If not, add fee × 1.1675 per night.
- Are you booking on Hyatt or Hilton points at a hotel where the registry shows the fee waived?
- Will you park? Compare hotel valet or self-parking with the Music City Center, Library or Nashville Yards garages, and remember parking is quoted before tax.
- Are your dates on an event weekend? Base rates, not taxes, are what spike for CMA Fest, Titans games and New Year’s Eve; our best time to visit Nashville guide lists the 2026–27 dates.
- What is the cancellation deadline, and does the prepaid rate refund the taxes and fees too?
- Did you screenshot the fee disclosure and the total at booking?
Why Nashville’s Hotel Tax Is 16.75% and Not Some Other Number
The figure is simply 7% state sales tax + 2.75% Davidson County sales tax (its 0.5% transit surcharge took effect February 1, 2025) + 7% Metro hotel occupancy privilege tax (raised from 6% on July 1, 2023). You will still see older guides quoting lower totals that predate one or both increases. The flat $2.50 per room per night sits outside the percentage and has not changed. For other categories of hotel logistics, see our no-fees & logistics section.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the hotel tax rate in Nashville, Tennessee in 2026?
16.75% of the room rate plus a flat $2.50 per room per night. The 16.75% is 9.75% sales tax (7% Tennessee plus 2.75% Davidson County, including the 0.5% transit surcharge approved by voters in 2024) and Metro Nashville’s 7% hotel occupancy privilege tax. Mandatory destination or resort fees are taxed at the same 16.75%.
How much does a $300 hotel room in Nashville actually cost per night?
$352.75 at a hotel with no fee: $300 plus $50.25 tax plus the $2.50 nightly fee. Add a $30 destination fee and it becomes $387.78, because the fee is taxed too ($35.03). Add valet at $58 before tax and the night passes $445. Rates on event dates can be far higher, but the tax formula does not change.
Are Nashville resort fees mandatory, and can I refuse to pay them?
They are mandatory at the hotels that charge them, and the hotel will not remove the fee because you skipped the gym or the drink credit. The practical options are to book one of the $0-fee hotels in our registry, such as Drury Plaza, Four Seasons, Hilton Nashville Downtown, Renaissance, AC Hotel, Virgin Hotels, Sheraton Grand or The Hermitage, or to use World of Hyatt or Hilton Honors points at a hotel where the fee is waived on award stays.
Is hotel parking in Nashville taxed?
Hotels quote parking before tax, and Tennessee includes overnight parking among its taxable services, so expect sales tax to be added to the $38–$58 nightly rates; Gaylord Opryland states on its site that parking prices are subject to tax. The 7% hotel occupancy tax and the $2.50 nightly fee apply to the room, not to parking. Public garages such as the Music City Center garage ($25–$35) and the Nashville Public Library garage ($20–$28) are the cheaper route if you do not need valet.
Do Hyatt or Hilton points waive the destination fee at Nashville hotels?
Yes at the hotels where our registry records it: Grand Hyatt Nashville, Thompson Nashville, Hyatt Centric Downtown, Dream Nashville and Holston House on World of Hyatt points, and Conrad Nashville on Hilton Honors points. Because those fees run $25–$32 plus 16.75% tax, a three-night award stay saves roughly $88–$112 in fees on top of the room rate. We have not verified a comparable waiver at Marriott-affiliated Nashville hotels, so check the award rate rules before assuming one.
